Instacart | Targeted Marketing & Business Strategy

Project Description: Instacart aimed to move beyond general sales strategies to implement targeted marketing campaigns by understanding diverse customer segments and purchasing behaviours. This project focused on identifying customer value, shopping patterns, and product popularity.

Solution: My approach involved analysing millions of Instacart orders and customer demographic data using Python (Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, Seaborn) in Jupyter Notebook. I conducted extensive data wrangling, cleaning, and variable derivation across multiple merged datasets to ensure data integrity. I then utilised descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, and various visualizations to uncover critical insights into customer loyalty, regional ordering habits, and demographic correlations, identifying high-value customer segments, peak shopping times, and popular product departments.

Conclusion: Data-backed recommendations were provided to Instacart stakeholders. These recommendations focused on optimising ad scheduling, tailoring product promotions based on spending patterns, and segmenting customers for highly targeted marketing campaigns, aiming to increase sales effectiveness and customer engagement.

Rockbuster | Online Video Launch Strategy

Project Description: Rockbuster Stealth, a traditional movie rental company, aimed to strategically transition to an online video rental service amidst competition. This required data-driven insights into customer behaviour and what drives revenue.

Solution: I Dd multiple SQL queries using PostgreSQL to build a relational database. This included joins, subqueries, and Common Table Expressions (CTEs), on film inventory, customer, and payment data to address critical business questions. Insights were drawn on revenue contributions by movie, average rental durations, along with the geographic distribution of customers. High lifetime value customers and regional sales patterns were identified.

Conclusion: Data-driven recommendations supported Rockbuster's market entry strategy for its online streaming service. This enabled informed content acquisition, targeted marketing campaigns for high-value customers, and regional sales optimisation aimed at boosting initial subscriptions and maximising revenue.

Influenza Season Planning | Staffing Optimisation

Project Description: A medical staffing agency needed a data-driven strategy to effectively distribute temporary medical personnel to clinics and hospitals across the United States during influenza season, aiming to prevent understaffing and overstaffing.

Solution: An end-to-end data analysis was conducted. This involved integrating US population data from the US Census Bureau with flu mortality records and laboratory test results from CDC FluView. The aim was to identify high-risk states, vulnerable populations, and seasonal peaks. Data cleaning, transformation, and integration were accurately performed and statistical analysis and hypothesis testing were used to determine influenza seasonality and regional variations. I then categorised states into low-, medium-, and high-need based on vulnerable populations.

Conclusion: My analysis resulted in a comprehensive, data-backed staffing plan and an interactive Tableau dashboard, enabling optimal resource allocation. This was projected to reduce instances of understaffing and overstaffing and enhance the agency's ability to meet patient demand during flu season effectively.

Global Bank | Customer Retention & Investment Strategy

Project Description: A global bank needed advanced analytical support for its anti-money laundering (AML) compliance department, focusing on client/transaction risk assessment, model optimisation, and mitigating ethical data dilemmas while also understanding customer retention.

Solution: I provided analytical support to improve client and transaction risk assessment strategies and to optimise various compliance models. Decision tree models were developed to pinpoint key customer churn predictors, which helped enable proactive retention strategies. Rigorous distribution analysis was also conducted, intended to detect and address bias in fraud detection models, thereby improving model fairness and accuracy. Time-series analysis and forecasting techniques were applied to analyse complex financial data, including oil prices, to inform strategic investment decisions. I also navigated data ethics by identifying potential biases, as well as ethical dilemmas, within financial datasets to enable responsible consumption of data and related reporting.

Conclusion: This project delivered data-driven insights and model optimisations that enhanced the bank's ability to assess fraud and churn risk. It also informed strategic investment decisions, strengthening the overall efficiency and ethical integrity of the AML compliance programme.

GameCo | Marketing Budget Planning

Project Description: GameCo, a new video game company, needed data-driven insights to inform game development strategy and optimise marketing budget allocation across various genres and global markets.

Solution: My approach involved performing a descriptive analysis of 16,000 video games (from 1980–2016), covering 12 genres and multiple platforms. I used Excel for data cleaning, pivot tables, and grouping/summarizing data. This work helped identify genre popularity, regional market shifts, and competitor performance over time, challenging initial assumptions about equal budget distribution.

Conclusion: Strategic recommendations were provided to GameCo executives focused on optimising marketing budget allocation. This involved advocating for region-specific and genre-specific investment strategies, projected to increase marketing ROI and inform future game development decisions.
